Video: Hands-On With PlayStation Phone

BARCELONA, Spain - Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play is the phone you have longed for ever given Sony's PSP was invented. It is, in any significant way, the initial authorized PSP phone, and you got to fool around with it at the Mobile World Congress. How does it do?

Pretty well. With the gamepad tucked out of the way, the Play is a sincerely monotonous Android phone, running 2.3 Gingerbread on a Snapdragon processor and versed with a 5-MP camera. As a phone, it is immaculately fine.

But slip that desk pad out, and things obtain fun, fast. You obtain a D-pad, the 4 aware PlayStation "shape" buttons, beginning and choose buttons, and a home symbol that mimics the periodic a next to the screen. There are moreover two touchpads and a span of shoulder buttons - around back, at the back the screen.

To expostulate the graphics, the Play has its own GPU, the 1-GHz Adreno 205. This allows the phone to pull the polygons around and manifestation them at 60 fps. Here you can see it in action, along with me getting my donkey kicked in the preinstalled Bruce Lee game:

Holding it similar to this, you dont think about right away that it is a phone. The buttons are fine, nonetheless if you were personification a Streetfighter -style game, those D-pad rolling special moves would be a small tricky. The shoulder buttons are easy to reach, even for my large hands, and the shade hinge is plain sufficient that things do not disappointment around while playing.

Games will advance from the Android Market, and there will be a well-defined PlayStation Store for shopping aged PS1 games, that will run on the Play.

It's impressive, but I'm disturbed that it will be as well costly to be successful. Amazon.de lists it at 650 euro, that converts to $880. That's a lot of cash, and even Sony Ericsson's guarantee of 50 launch titles might not be sufficient to confuse you from the plaque price. The launch date has yet to be announced, but could be as early as March.
