Game|Life Video: The Mostly Serious E3 Awards Show

We run down the highs and lows of final week's Electronic Entertainment Expo on today's GameLife video.

While this year's E3 was light on new diversion announcements and complicated on lowest-common-denominator violence, there were still a few splendid spots if you looked hard enough. With that in mind, you present this E3 awards show, that is usually rather facetious. We present GameLife's authorized awards is to categories of E3 that indeed matter: Best Headshot, Biggest Flirt, U So Crazy, Biggest Loser and the Grand Prize Winner.

If you do not wish spoilers, end getting more information here, since I'd similar to to take a few time to serve notify any choice:

Best Headshot: The publication bard recapping Sony's press discussion called the clapping that followed the demo of "inappropriate." I regard a few people are wrongly presumption that the assembly was applauding since they were titillated by the demo's final image, a man's head being exploded by a shotgun.

My take is rather different: In an E3 filled with the thousands of unmourned deaths of unidentified antagonists, raises the stakes by creation any demise matter. The principal character, faced with 6 group perplexing to snuff out him and usually 4 bullets, is in a unfortunate incident that the diversion plays to the hilt. Firing a gun just once in actual life is a hair-raising and deeply material thing, something that the bullet-hell action embodied in many other videogames erases.

was a profoundly moving and retaining demo to watch, and the final let go of that built-up tragedy at the end, I think, was the result in of the extemporaneous applause. I do not regard any person was clapping is to disturb of tributary murdering but since they knew they'd just seen a diversion that invested actual the theater and emotion in to its earthy conflict.

Biggest Flirt: I covered this more deeply in Wired's look at the 4 are-they-or-aren't-they next-gen games and tech demos shown at E3. We might not have seen Xbox 720 or PlayStation 4 at E3 officially, but you could already be seeking at a few of the launch titles.

U So Crazy: The Wii U, for improved or worse, was the greatest story of E3. Many appear assured that Nintendo has at last mislaid the plot. Then again, it felt really similar to the vibe at E3 2004, when the Nintendo DS looked similar to a back square of technology and the second shade looked similar to an not essential gimmick that wouldn't really change gaming. And you know how that incited out.

Then again, as Sony once found itself having to confess many E3s ago, past success does not pledge future performance.

E3′s Biggest Loser: Hey, recollect PlayStation Vita? It's this diversion network that came out, uh, at a few point. Not to say that Sony has forgotten about it, but it indispensable a large E3 pull for Vita. What it had instead was a feeble lineup and no bombshells. The biggest, greatest diversion for Vita is , and it looks flattering good, but it's still a spinoff by a B-team that's shipping on the same day as the incredibly expected .

The other large diversion from E3 is . And when I say it was at E3 I meant that Sony showed the game's trademark .

In a broad sense, Nintendo and Sony are both being beaten by mobile games. I regard there's a few weight to the thought that the best-in-class practice that you can usually obtain on dedicated gaming gadgets are still going to be convincing products. I'd rather have than 40 $1 iPhone games.

But the complaint for stage holders is that not all is or even . And I would rather have 40 $1 iPhone games than 90 percent of the other games on normal portables. In this daring new world, dedicated games consoles need nothing partial of triple-A practice by the most appropriate developers. Nintendo 3DS, for all of its problems, unquestionably has those. Vita needs them badly.

E3′s Biggest Winner : Ellen Page. If you skepticism this, inquire yourself: Who else emerged from E3 completely unscathed? Big games were derided for their harsh hostility and samey design. Nintendo didn't set upon out with Wii U, but it usually hit a single. The many certain babble is about , the expected follow-up to that dumbfounded audiences with its heated digital opening by lead singer Ellen Page.
