Hackers in China have compromised personal e-mail accounts of hundreds of tip US officials, army crew and journalists, Google has said.
The US firm mentioned a promotion to get hold of passwords originated in Jinan and was directed at monitoring e-mail.
Google mentioned its safety was not breached but indicated individuals' passwords were performed by fraud.
Chinese diplomatic activists and officials in other Asian countries were moreover targeted, Google mentioned .
"Google rescued and has disrupted this promotion to take users' passwords and guard their emails," the firm mentioned on Wednesday.
"We have told victims and feel safe their accounts. In addition, you have told applicable supervision authorities."
In Washington, the White House mentioned it was questioning the reports but did not think authorized US supervision e-mail accounts had been breached.
The e-mail fraud uses a use well known as "spear phishing" in that definite e-mail users are duped in to divulging their login qualifications to a web page that resembles Google's Gmail web service (or that appears connected to the target's work) but is in fact run by hackers, according to a technical inform expelled by Google.
Having performed the user's e-mail login and password, the hackers then discuss it Gmail's service to deliver incoming e-mail to other account set up by the hacker.
In Washington, the BBC's Adam Brookes says it is exceedingly tough for analysts to establish either governments or people are accountable for such attacks.
But the fact that the victims were people with access to sensitive, even secret information, raises the probability that this was cyber espionage, not cyber crime, the match says.
