Sturmey Archer's Minimal Hub Packs In Gears, Brake

Sturmey Archer's new S2C heart manages to fill up in a gear-shift and a coaster brake, all without any cables. Unsurprisingly, its initial sell excursion is on a clean-lined track-style bike.

The large heart weighs in at 1400-grams, or only over 3-pounds, interjection to all the hardware it packs inside. On the outside, though, the only thing that gives it divided is the lever-arm is to brake.

So how does it work? To change gear, you pedal back, flipping between two ratios (direct expostulate and 138%). To end the bike, you press back a small harder to rivet the brake. Braking moreover automatically switches you to the descend gear, nonetheless a rapid flip of the pedals will obtain you back in top-gear if you like.

You'll may wish to mix this with a correct front-brake, primarily if you live in a rocky area and do not wish to erupt the coaster out. The initial bike versed with the S2C is the $400 Torker KB2, a inexpensive hi-ten and cro-mo "track" bike drilled for a front brake (and with fender-mounts and bottle-cage bolts). It even has a chain-ring guard, so you do not must be wear lean jeans to float it.

You won't be receiving this in to the velodrome, interjection to its porky 28-pounds, but it creates a inexpensive and easy-to-maintain commuter bike, primarily if you increase those fenders in winter.
