Internet Society Says Attacks Against WikiLeaks Are Illegal

Network World - Takedown attempts against WikiLeaks criticise what the Internet stands for, and those accountable should be tracked down and prosecuted, says the Internet Society, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the open use of the Internet.

In its December newsletter, ISOC says it recognizes that WikiLeaks' posting of tactful cables is a fret to some, but knocking the site offline is illegal.

"Unless and until apt laws are brought to bear to take the wikileaks.org domain down legally, technical solutions should be sought to reestablish its correct presence," ISOC says, "and apt activities taken to search for and take to court entities (if any) that acted maliciously to take it off the air."

Wikileaks has suffered distributed DoS attacks and in reply supporters of WikiLeaks have launched DDoS attacks of their own against Visa, Mastercard ( MA ) and Amazon.com ( AMZN ).

"The Internet Society is founded on key beliefs of giveaway countenance and non taste that are necessary to persist the sincerity and application of the Internet," ISOC writes. "We think that this situation dramatically illustrates that those beliefs are now at risk.

"Free countenance should not be limited by bureaucratic or in isolation controls over P.C. hardware or software, telecommunications infrastructure, or other necessary components of the Internet."

WikiLeaks has managed to go on posting the leaked papers and uninformed ones with help from counterpart sites around the world.

ISOC records that due to the really volatile pattern of the Internet, the attempts to keep WikiLeaks offline have failed, but they have had a disastrous outcome on the Internet in general.
