More than a million websites closed down in China final year, a state-run regard container has said.
The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences mentioned there were were 41% fewer websites at the finish of 2010 than a year earlier.
Chinese officials have tightened regulations on the internet in new years, and they launched a crackdown on publishing websites in 2009.
The academy's assistant professor mentioned there was no link, insisting China had a "high turn of liberty of online speech".
Liu Ruisheng mentioned that notwithstanding the disappearing number of sites, the number of web pages had risen to 60 billion during 2010 - a 79% enlarge on the formerly year.
"This means the calm is getting stronger, whilst the organisation is getting more despotic and more regulated," he said.
Civil rights campaigners have long railed against China's web censors, who levy controls well known as the Great Firewall of China.
A number of websites are customarily blocked, such as the BBC's Chinese denunciation service, and amicable media sites similar to Facebook, Youtube and Twitter.
