Sony's new handheld console - the Playstation Vita - is set to launch in Europe on Tuesday.

The device launched in Japan final XMas and Sony say more than half a million units have right away been sold.

It will be a opponent to Nintendo's 3DS, braggadocio a quad-core processor and 5in (12.7cm) OLED hold screen.

However, it is entering a aggressive marketplace as mobile unintentional gamer space becomes increasingly dominated by diversion applications for smartphones.

Two not similar versions of the device will go on sale: a model with wi-fi connectivity for 229 and an extended chronicle that moreover uses the 3G mobile network.

Johnny Minkley, from video gaming website Eurogamer, mentioned the Vita was "the many capable handheld gaming network ever made", but he believed cost would be an issue.

"It is a high-end device and Sony has shot itself in the feet with the exclusive mental recall cards [on that the many of the games come], that is an updated responsibility that everybody needs to make on day one," he added.

When Nintendo launched its 3DS network final year, sales were poor, forcing the firm to cut back 40% of the price, notwithstanding vicious acclaim.

It was not until games such as Mario Kart were launched that sales of the 3DS proposed to collect up.

In contrast, the Vita will have 30 not similar games existing at launch. Some will be full-price blurb titles, whilst others are third-party downloads labelled at beneath 10.

The device has had often certain reply from the gaming media. Tech Radar gave it four-and-a-half stars out of 5 and mentioned it took "gaming to a new level" .

However, CNet gave it an categorically median 3 out of 5 stars and mentioned it was "bulky with an unimpressive battery life".

The site added: "All but the many hardcore gaming nuts would be improved served by something similar to the iPod touch."

"Gaming on the smartphone and inscription is a reality and it would be ridiculous to hang our heads in the sand," he said.

"We have to denote that our device and the gaming experience is differentiated and you give great worth to clear the financial expenses they have to make to purchase in to Vita."

Piers Harding Rolls, an researcher with Screen Digest, mentioned CNet had highlighted a complaint that, longer term, Sony might have to face up to.

"There are lots of other gadgets out there gift games content, so the marketplace is really competitive.

"Our sales figure prophecy is not a tiny amount by any means, but if you compare it to smartphones, it is but a subset," he added.

Sony mentioned that, is to initial two years, it would be targeting its core demographic: 18 to 25-year-old males who were gamers initial and foremost.

"When you obtain to year two and year three, you will try to enlarge the demographic to bring in the younger consumer - the more unintentional consumer, perhaps," mentioned Mr Ryan.

How Sony will accomplish that waste to be seen.

"Many people have smartphones so already have games on the move," mentioned Mr Minkley.

"The greatest questionmark is, who is it for, outward of gamers. Where does Vita fit in? Right now, I really do not know."
