Caymans Beat Wales To .cym Domain

A four-year promotion to secure a ".cym" internet residence for Wales has been mislaid to the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean.

DotCYM plan leaders in Aberystwyth mentioned it was disappointing, but they still plan to bid for a Welsh chronicle of the .com or .co.uk domain.

They are attractive for new suggestions and mentioned .cymru could be used instead.

An internet consultant mentioned it was "more complex" for nations similar to Wales to secure their own domain names.

The Cayman Islands already has its own internet domain, .ky, but it is moreover purebred to use .cym.

DotCYM was set up in 2006 to promotion for a Welsh internet residence name and claims the encouragement of businesses, local authorities and open bodies.

The organisation has the encouragement of the Welsh Assembly Government, that awarded it a 20,000 give in 2008.

The Welsh bid follows the successful .cat focus from the Catalan linguistic and informative community.

Following the set back, DotCYM handling executive Sin Jobbins, from Aberystwyth, has asked supporters to advance up with new suggestions and has appealed for their views.

Mr Jobbins mentioned the Welsh domain bid would be presented at the "earliest probable opportunity" to Icann, the organisation determining names on the internet.

"It looks increasingly expected that Icann will open the focus routine in 2011 so you must be confirm on the Welsh domain by the finish of this year," he added.

"We'd similar to to listen to the views of people on that domain they'd similar to to use, for example .cymru .cwl (Cymru Wales) or .wales.

"We are still going forward with the bid and that isn't affected. Not being able to use .cym is a shame, but it's not a problem."

Mr Jobbins mentioned after submitting the bid his organisation would have to wait for for up to 6 months for consent and it could be a year before the domain goes live.

Haydn Blackey, of the University of Glamorgan, who lectures about the internet said: "It's simpler for nations recognized by the United Nations to secure these domains, rsther than than nations, similar to Wales, that are segment of incomparable countries.

"For Wales to make its own affirm (for a domain) creates it's more complex."

He mentioned Icann was expected to routine a bid from a nation that already had a "distinctive national identity" a lot quicker.
