Facebook Unveils 'groups' Feature

Facebook has introduced a raft of features directed at giving users more manage over their personal data.

A groups underline will enable users to mention circles of friends with whom they wish to share not similar data.

For the initial time, users will moreover be able to download all the information they have uploaded onto the site.

They will moreover find it simpler to see how particular applications are using personal information, Facebook's arch senior manager Mark Zuckerberg said.

"The changes currently are about giving people more manage over how they share in a lot of not similar contexts," Mr Zuckerberg told BBC News.

"One of the things you have listened is that people only wish to share information with not as big groups of people.

"It will enable people to share things that they wouldn't have longed for to share with all of their friends."

He added: "There are a few things you are cozy adage to all your friends at once but a lot of things you only wish to share with your shut co-workers or your family and there only hasn't been a great way to do that until now."

The groups underline will enable users form online havens around a careful round of people only as they do in the actual world.

Members will then be able to share information with people definite to that group.

A list underline on Facebook already lets users emanate subsets of their friends but Mr Zuckerberg mentioned that only about 5% of its 500 million users use it.

"Groups will change behaviour," Augie Ray a senior researcher with investigate firm Forrester told BBC News.

"It's probable that people will come together Facebook since they will feel they can manage who sees their information. I am a really open person and detonate all I say on Twitter or Facebook but right away something similar to this will enable people to regard more deeply about who will see what they say, and will enlarge engagement."

Another researcher Ray Valdes of Gartner called groups "a leading miracle in a really long thoroughfare that represents segment of the continuing expansion of our amicable connections".

Facebook mentioned its engineers had been in lockdown is to past 60 days working on these new products.

One of the new collection called "Download Your Information" is written to enable users to download all they have ever posted to the site, such as photos, position updates and wall posts.

The apparatus is a leading leaving for Facebook, that has come beneath critique in the past for not permitting users access to their own data.

This effectively sealed Facebook users in to the site, not able to to dock their information to other sites.

"All the information that is on Facebook comes from people pity it," mentioned Mr Zuckerberg.

"It is not our information. It is people's information. We only have this burly philosophical idea that people own that information and they should be able set precisely who can see it, pierce it to not similar applications and use it how they want. They should be able to take it away if they want."

The groups underline is the one the firm touted many heavily and one that Mr Zuckerberg seemed many unapproachable of.

"We regard that what you have out of the box, chronicle one, blows away all else," he said, referring to "groups" services offering by internet stalwarts such as Yahoo! and Google.

Privacy has been a regular thorn is to world's greatest amicable network when it introduces new products or changes settings on the site.

"Mostly I am cheerful they are giving users more manage and I regard the groups aspect is to many segment does give you this updated control," mentioned Larry Magid, co-director of ConnectSafely.org.

"The only fret I have is that friends can add people to the group, so if you emanate a organisation and are in a organisation you have to be wakeful of not only who you add but who others add.

"As long as you are wakeful of who is in the organisation it may be a great privacy tool. If it gets out of palm it could give you a clarity of fake security."

The hurl out of new products comes among reports that a syncing underline on the iPhone lets Facebook access meeting information and share it on the site.

"It's really probable that your in isolation phone figures - and those of lots of your and their friends - are on the site," mentioned Charles Arthur of the Guardian journal .

Another tech blogger, Kurt outpost Moos, who was the initial to inform about this underline in January, summarized his concerns.

"Phone figures are in isolation and valuable. Most people who have entrusted you with their phone figures pretence you will keep them in isolation and safe," he said.

In a matter to the BBC, Facebook fixed that the site authorised them to sync their friends' meeting information.

"The skill to sync their contacts is used is to role of joining [users] with their friends," it said.

"All of this information is in isolation and is not common with any friends or any third party.

"Even if someone longed for to, they could not share any of this information with other friends, for example."
