Toshiba Supermarket Scanner Detects Products By Shape

One of many reasons because Japan is improved than all of us: Toshiba has created a supermarket scanner that does not need barcodes to pick out create but instead it detects particular kind of fruit and vegetables simply from its shapes.

The device uses a camera with visual pattern approval technology that filters out "visual noise" before identifying the create formed on its shape, aspect pattern, and coloration. It moreover does the standard labels-and-coupons scanning, but that's no fun.

So far, the scanner has a paltry database so it might not be able to discuss it cilantro and prosaic parsley apart. It might take years to built a database decent sufficient for blurb use.
