The 3G Kindle is The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Milky Way . Sure, you can read books on it, but with its web browser, you can moreover access Wikipedia from wherever in the world. Until now, though, there was a thing it didn't do so good - translation. That has been prearranged by Kindlefish, done by Gadget Lab reader Nicholas.
Nicholas found that Google Translate is really bad matched to the e-reader's admittedly paltry web browser. "Standard Google Translate doesn't work is to Kindle," he writes on his blog, "and the mobile Google Translate page earnings content that is as well tiny to be simply read, and a little clunky for use on the Kindle."
To obtain around this, he wrote a new front-end called Kindlefish , a loyalty to the zodiacally translating Babelfish from Douglas Adams' five-part Hitchhiker's trilogy. The interface is simple, vouchsafing you set 3 elite languages for rapid access, and a submit denunciation (English by default). You only sort your word on the Kindle's little set of keys and strike the "Translate" button.
Kindlefish outputs the interpretation in very considerable type, so you can uncover it to a waiter or storekeeper without having to clarify anything. Asian alphabets look quite good on the e-ink screen.
We tested it out, and it functions good enough. With the Kindle's less-than-ergonomic set of keys and the slowness of its browser, though, you'll need calm to use it. In other words, it's not going to help you collect up that French cutie sitting opposite from you in the cafe, but it might help you obtain a potion of vegetable H2O from the waiter.
If you wish to try it out, head over to the Kindlefish site on your Kindle. The site is on giveaway hosting, but if it is swamped by traffic then Nicholas skeleton to pierce it to a more permanent home.
