Yes, fruit recognition. Show the camera a melon, a zucchini or any other fruit or vegetable, and it will agree to it. And no, it won't only discuss it you "this is a melon." Instead, it will discuss it you that expect melon it is, where it came from and when it was grown.
This isn't magic. The camera relies on a sketch having already been taken. Then, when it sees a fruit later, it uses a multiple of face approval and fingerprint approval technologies to authorization the fruit, relating it up with anything it has seen before. It turns out that the colors and wrinkles of fruit and veg are particular sufficient to make the network accurate to a in a million.
But why? Tracking. Simple by gnawing batches of fruits as they advance off the tree, the grower, shipper and customer can follow the movements of their create without using RFID tags. That clearly creates for cheaper, safer shipping, but what can it do for you, the fruit consumer?
Imagine you have a cellphone with NEC's tech built in. Now suppose you are in a supermarket, with that phone (if you're getting more information this post on your phone, in a supermarket, feel giveaway to obtain freaked out correct around now). You could tear a print of the banana in front of you and be now told where and when it comes from. In this case, it's expected to be a shock, as unripened bananas store really good for many months.
The really most appropriate thing about this news, though, is the title of the Japanese essay that describes it. Where else would you find the difference "melon opening verification"?
